Barrister Shahriar Kabir’s Claims vs. Historical Reality
Recently, Barrister Shahriar Kabir claimed that in March 1971, Bengalis committed genocide against Biharis. Specifically, he mentioned that on March 14th alone, 6,000 to 7,000 Biharis were killed in Dhaka, Saidpur, and Santahar. He further suggested that the Pakistan Army’s 'crackdown' on the night of March 25th was a reaction to these events.
In contrast to this claim, the original report from the daily newspaper 'The Daily Ittefaq' published on March 7, 1971 (see attached image), bears witness to a completely different reality:
A Call to Stop Genocide in Bengal: The main headline of the paper read— "Stop this genocide on the soil of Bengal!" This proves that the genocide was not being committed by Bengalis, but rather against them.
The Real Situation in Chittagong: The column on the right side of the paper clearly carries the headline— "138 Killed in Chittagong." The report states that in the 24 hours following March 5th, this large number of Bengalis were martyred due to attacks by Biharis.
The Origin of the Attacks: According to the report, it was the Biharis who initiated armed attacks against Bengalis starting from the first week of March.
Logical Questions: If, as Shahriar Kabir claims, 6,000 to 7,000 people had lost their lives in a single day, why is there no specific documentary evidence of this in any international media or historical records of that time?
To prevent the distortion of history, we must rely on contemporary newspapers and documentary evidence. It is deeply unfortunate to question a nation’s glorious Liberation War and its ultimate sacrifices by distorting information.
