Domestic Production Meets Bangladesh’s Petrol and Octane Demand — Avoid Panic Buying

In recent days, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has led many people to fear a potential fuel shortage or price hike in Bangladesh. Driven by this misconception, some have rushed to fuel stations and started stockpiling more fuel than necessary, which is largely creating an artificial shortage in the market.
The reality is that Bangladesh’s entire demand for petrol and octane can be met through condensate processed as a by-product from the country’s own natural gas fields. Bangladesh is almost self-sufficient in petrol, while small quantities of octane—approximately 10–20%—are occasionally imported to enhance quality. Additionally, limited exports of both products have taken place at various times. Therefore, there is little reason for concern regarding petrol and octane supplies.
However, it is important to note that Bangladesh still relies entirely on imports to meet its diesel demand.
For this reason, citizens are urged not to be influenced by rumors and to refrain from purchasing fuel unnecessarily. Public awareness and responsible behavior can help keep the fuel market stable and prevent artificial shortages.

সম্প্রতি মধ্যপ্রাচ্যে যুদ্ধের কারণে অনেকেই ভাবছেন দেশে তেলের সংকট হবে বা দাম বেড়ে যাবে। এমন ভুল ধারণা থেকে অনেকেই পাম্পে ভিড় করছেন এবং প্রয়োজনের অতিরিক্ত তেল মজুত করছেন—যার ফলেই মূলত কৃত্রিম সংকট তৈরি হচ্ছে।
বাস্তবতা হলো—বাংলাদেশে পেট্রল ও অকটেনের চাহিদার বৃহত্তর অংশ দেশীয় গ্যাসক্ষেত্র থেকে প্রাপ্ত কনডেনসেট প্রক্রিয়াজাত (by-product) করে পূরণ করা হয়। পেট্রলের ক্ষেত্রে দেশ প্রায় স্বয়ংসম্পূর্ণ, তবে অকটেনের মান বৃদ্ধির জন্য মাঝে মাঝে ১০‑২০% আমদানি করা হয়। এছাড়াও বিভিন্ন সময় সীমিত পরিমাণে উভয় পণ্যেরই রপ্তানি করা হয়েছে। তাই পেট্রল–অকটেন নিয়ে দুশ্চিন্তার তেমন কারণ নেই।
তবে ডিজেলের ক্ষেত্রে আমাদের এখনো পুরোপুরি আমদানির ওপর নির্ভর করতে হয়।
তাই গুজবে কান না দিয়ে অপ্রয়োজনীয়ভাবে অতিরিক্ত তেল কেনা থেকে বিরত থাকুন। সবার সচেতনতাই পারে বাজার পরিস্থিতি স্বাভাবিক রাখতে।
